When you enter Ristorante Luce in Bern, you feel like you're in Italy. The family-run restaurant has been in business for 29 years and offers its guests an authentic Italian experience. The restaurant specializes in the cuisine of the Emilia-Romagna region, which is known for its rich and aromatic dishes.
The story of Ristorante Luce and its owner Stevo Nilovic is shaped by a long passion for gastronomy. Stevo began his career in the hotel industry, with his first contact with gastronomy coming at the Hotel Freienhof, where he initially only intended to work temporarily. However, he enjoyed it so much that he decided to stay in the industry. His love for Italian cuisine started during his time as the managing director at Molino Thurm. On a trip to Italy with the company’s general manager, Stevo discovered his passion for the country and its cuisine.
After five years at Molino Thurm, Stevo opened his first restaurant, Il Grissino, which specialized in high-quality Italian pizzas. During his travels, he discovered the Emilia-Romagna region and fell in love with the Romagnol cuisine. When the Metropol restaurant closed in 1998 near Grissino, Stevo took over the building and opened Ristorante Luce in 1999.
Since then, Ristorante Luce has become an important part of the Bernese gastronomy scene. Right next door is Ristorante Galleria Luce, which is also run by Stevo and Nilo Nilovic together with their family. Both restaurants offer the same cuisine but differ in their atmosphere. Galleria Luce is modern with a touch of nostalgia, while the classic Luce is designed in the style of Romagna.
Stevo places great importance on the small details in order to offer his guests an authentic Italian experience. In 2022, Ristorante Luce switched to a new POS system from Vendomat, which simplifies the ordering and billing process, saving time.
After a year, we would like to learn from them how the new system has changed their processes. The interview will include Stevo Nilovic and Nicola Nilovic (Stevo’s son).
Stevo's answer: At first, we had some difficulties getting used to it. But after making a few adjustments, everything started working perfectly. We have a Piadina stand, a cold kitchen, a hot kitchen, and a pizzeria. The new system makes our work easier because we no longer have to think about which kitchen the dish comes from. We simply enter the order, and the system automatically assigns it and informs the other production areas. This saves time and relieves the kitchen from having to communicate extensively.
Nicola's answer: For new employees, the system is very easy to use. They only need to know the menu, and there is no long training period. In the beginning, it was tough for employees who had been used to the old system for 20 years, but now they are also very quick with the new POS.
Stevo's answer: My employees enjoy working with the tablet, and that motivates them even more. The fact that I can view sales data in real-time on my smartphone, whether I'm on the go or in the business, is a big advantage. The system also automatically generates the daily and monthly reports, which is a huge luxury for us.
Nicola's answer: With the new system, we can see which dishes are popular and which ones are not doing as well. We can also see which dishes we should offer more often. This wasn’t possible with the old system.
Stevo's answer: The waitstaff can now quickly transfer tables during shift changes or reopen closed tables to add more orders. This saves time and reduces stress for the service team. After COVID, guest behavior, particularly during the payment process, has completely changed. Guests now expect to pay immediately, have the bill split by the number of people per table, or share a bottle of wine based on the number of guests at the table. This has provided our staff with an elegant and easy-to-use support system.
Stevo's answer: Definitely. It was a stroke of luck that we chose this system. We’ve found a partner in Vendomat that we can work closely with.
To conclude, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire Nilovic family and, of course, to the entire team at Ristorante Luce. If you're looking for an authentic Italian experience in Switzerland, then you definitely shouldn't miss out on Ristorante Luce. Here, you'll not only be treated to delicious dishes, but also welcomed by a warm, dedicated team in a unique atmosphere.
